Epidemics - Measles: A Sign of Jesus' Return! Matthew 24:7-8, Part 2

In last week's blog, I began to talk about Measles, one of the (4) epidemics I am focusing on as a sign Jesus spoke about in Matthew 24:7-8 that points to his return to the earth. While writing however, I was interrupted by news of Cuba's earthquake. Now let's take up where we left off about Measles.

Wikipedia, the free on-line encyclopedia has this to say about Measles:

"Measles is an infection of the respiratory system caused by a virus. Measles is spread through respiration (contact with fluids from an infected person's nose and mouth, either directly or through aerosol transmission), and is highly contagious - 90% of people without immunity sharing a house with an infected person will catch the Measles.

The classical symptoms of measles include four day fevers, the three C's - cough, coryza (runny nose) and conjunctivitis (red eyes).

History - The Antoine Plague, 165-180 AD, also known as the Plague of Galen, who described it, was probably smallpox or measles. The disease killed as much as one third of the population in some areas, and decimated the Roman army.

In roughly the last 150 years, measles has been estimated to have killed about 200 million people! During the 1850s, measles killed a fifth of Hawaii's people. In 1875, measles killed over 40,000 Fijians, approximately one-third of the population. In 1954, the virus causing the disease was isolated from an 11 - year old boy from the United States, David Edmonston, and adapted and propagated on chick embryo tissue culture. To date, 21 strains of the measles virus have been identified. Licensed vaccines to prevent the disease became available in 1963."

When asked by his disciples what would be the conditions of the world prior to his return to the earth, (Matthew 24:3) Jesus' answer included "pestilences" which means epidemics, such as Measles, Bubonic Plague, HIV AIDS, West Nile Virus, H1N1, Flu, Tuberculosis, Hepatitis, the common cold, just to name a few.

Many of us don't realize that many of the diseases that we have become accustomed to and think little about, are actually the fulfilment of the conditions that Jesus said would be in existence upon his return to Earth! We are living in those conditions at this very moment!

Next week I will focus on yet another epidemic which points to the return of Jesus, HIV AIDS, as we continue in our series of Signs of Jesus Return!

Epidemics - Measles: A Sign of Jesus' Return! Matthew 24:7-8

In my previous blog I focused on Bubonic Plague as one of the epidemics or pestilences of Matthew 24:7-8. Jesus predicted that epidemics would be one of the conditions on the earth at the time of his return:

7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Another global killer epidemic which has reached pandemic proportions during our generation is Measles.

I've always thought of Measles as just a childhood disease, but not an epidemic responsible for killing millions during this generation. Here is what Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia on the Internet has to say about Measles:

BREAKING NEWS: "Moderate Earthquake, Aftershock Shake Eastern Cuba!" (MSNBC World News Headline)
AP Associated Press
updated 3:55pm CT, Sat., March. 20, 2010

As I am writing this blog, I was informed by my wife as she watched the Saturday Evening News, that there has been an Earthquake in Cuba! The above report read in part:

"Havana - A moderate earthquake and smaller aftershock rattled houses and nerves in eastern Cuba Saturday near the U.S. holding facility at Guantanamo Bay. No damages or injuries were reported.

The quake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.6, struck just after 1:pm EDT (1700GMT) 30 miles (45 kilometers) south of Guantanamo, the Cuban city adjacent to the U.S. base, said the U.S Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado. An aftershock measuring 4.8 shook the same region about 90 minutes later.

Neither residents nor Cuban state media reported injuries or damage.....
Yolando Tabio, a resident of Santiago's historic center, told the Associated Press there was no apparent damage, but that many people left their homes in fear, particularly after the second tremor.

It was really strong, Tabio said. First there was a horizontal shake, then the next one was up and down..."

People, it is time to wake up! We are living in the days of the Return of Jesus Christ to the Earth! These earthquakes are not 'coincidences' as some will surely say! They are signs of the return of Jesus to the Earth as he predicted over 2000 years ago! We cannot stop these things from happening. But we can prepare ourselves for His Return! How do we do this? I am glad you asked!

John 3:16 says,

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

It is time to accept the free gift of salvation by repenting of your sins and asking God to forgive and save you in the name of his Son, Jesus! He will!

I will continue next week on "Epidemics - Measles: A Sign of Jesus' Return!" Unless I am interrupted with more Signs of Jesus' Return!

Epidemics - Bubonic Plague!: A Sign of Jesus' Return Matthew 24:7-8

Jesus foretold several signs that would point to His soon return to the Earth. In last weeks blog I focused on earthquakes because as you know there have been (4) in 2010 alone. And I briefly touched on two others in verse (7) which include wars and famines. However there is a third sign in verse (7) that I will speak about in this and several blogs following and that is, "pestilences". Jesus said pestilences would be one of the signs of his return to the Earth (Matthew 24:7,8):

7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.
8 And all these are the beginning of sorrows. (Bold for emphasis)

The word "pestilence" is not used in our contemporary English today. It is an Old English term which means: any infectious disease that develops and spreads rapidly among many people.

These types of diseases used to be called "plagues". Today we call them "epidemics". When epidemics spread among multitudes of people they are referred to as "pandemics".

The Greek word for "pestilence" is "loimos", pronounced "loy-mos" which literally means pestilence or epidemic.

The Bubonic Plague (Information from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
Worldwide and historically, this epidemic is said to have killed almost 200 million people beginning with the Byzantine Empire during the sixth century. It was then known as the Plague of Justinian, after emperor Justinian I who contracted the disease, but with extensive treatment survived.

The Bubonic Plague is among the most disastrous pandemics in history, also known as the Black Death. According to Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, the plague swept through Europe in the 1300's killing more than 25 million people, a third of the European population!

The Black Death is thought to have originated in the Gobi Desert, carried by fleas on rats. The plague spread along trade routes and reached the Crimea in 1346 and traveled eastward to the Yangtze river valley bringing down the Yuan dynasty!

In 1347 it traveled to Constantinople and then to Alexandria, killing thousands every day and not long after, arrived in Western Europe.

During the next few centuries the plague hit several locations with lesser severity. The Great Plague of London, 1665-1666 and the Great Plague of Vienna in 1679 were the last major outbreaks of the bubonic plague in Europe.

The plague re-surfaced in the mid 19th century in Central Asia, killing millions in China and India, afterwards, spreading worldwide into the early 20th century.

Jesus obviously knew what he was talking about, because there have been pestilences down through history since He ascended into Heaven. And even with all of our medical breakthroughs, new epidemics continue to be born, even to this day!

Over the next several blogs, I will discuss several other major epidemics that plague our generation and are signs that point to the Soon Return of Jesus the Christ, Messiah!

Though these are fearful times, we can have peace knowing that no matter what happens on earth we have salvation through Jesus Christ, the Lord. If you don't have the peace that only He can give, why not call on Him now, repenting of your sins and asking for forgiveness through His shed blood. He will forgive you just has he has so many others.

Call upon Him to save you, and have peace for your tomorrow!

Earthquakes: A Sign of Jesus' Return! Matthew 24:7-8

There is much discussion about the year 2012 as being the year in which the end of the world will take place. Well, I don't think anyone can predict the end of the world. However, Jesus did give us a timeline by which to predict His Return to planet earth. (Read Matthew 24th Chapter) And it does appear that his return is near based on the numerous occurrences of recent earthquakes and other natural disasters. Look at what Jesus said in Matthew 24:7-8,

7 For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.

8 All these are the beginning of sorrows.

Nations rising against nations obviously means that many countries will be at war with one another when Jesus returns to Earth. We know this has been going on for a while now. Famines means food shortages. There is no question that food shortages exist due to global climate changes as well as man-made conditions. And of course we can expect even more food shortages as extreme climactic changes continue to occur. So "famines" is definitely a present and ongoing condition!

"Earthquakes in divers places" means earthquakes will happen in various geographical locations within the same time period. This is what we are seeing presently. The earthquake phenomenon began most recently with Haiti January 12; then Chile February 27; next Taiwan March 3rd; and now Turkey early this morning, March 8 at 4:32am!

The world has been visited with an earthquake each month in 2010, the last two only five days apart! This is unprecedented in our generation!

But what does this sign mean? What is going to happen next?

Jesus states in verse (18) that "All these are the beginning of sorrows", not the end of the world. And since He said these things are the beginning of sorrows, it means there are worse things ahead. Jesus also said in verse (6) "the end is not yet". If Jesus said these things will happen, they will happen. We cannot stop them, so what must we do?

Each of us must get our hearts right with God, and keep them right! How do we do this? By repenting of our sins and asking for salvation through Jesus Christ his Son; and then living in line with his teachings daily, according to the Bible. Jesus died on the cross for this very thing!

Look at what Jesus said in John 3:16 of the New Testament: "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

Call on Jesus today and be saved. And no matter what happens or when it happens in this world, you will be prepare for the next!

But make no mistake about it, we are running out of time. Do it now! None of us are promised tomorrow!

God's Big Net! John 13:47-50

Jesus always used parables when teaching those who were not already following him about the kingdom of God. A parable is a short example of something already known to explain something unknown.

One such parable Jesus used was about fishing to reveal what will happen at the end of the world. Listen to what he said in Matthew 13:47-50:

47 Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net that was cast into the sea, and gathered every kind:
48 which when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.
49 So shall it be at the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the just,
50 And shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be wailing and gnashing of teeth.

Jesus is saying that the kingdom of heaven is like a net which men threw into the sea and caught many kinds of fish. When the net was drawn to shore, fishermen separated the good fish from the bad. The good fish were placed in containers while the bad were thrown away.

Then in verse 49 and 50 Jesus uses this scenario to explain what will happen to people at the end of the world.

Like the fishermen gathered in many fish, God shall gather all the people of the world and judge them! The just shall be separated from the wicked, and the wicked shall be cast into the lake of fire! And there shall be wailing (crying) and gnashing of teeth (the gnawing of the tongue in pain)
As harsh as this parable might sound, Jesus tells it because he loves us so much and does not want us to experience the horrors of hell and the lake of fire which is the consequences of sin!

This is the reason he gave his life for us. Jesus told Nicodemus, a Jewish Rabbi in John 3:16 of God the Father's great love for us, to keep us from the judgement of hell and the lake of fire. Listen to what he said:

16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Jesus died for my sins and yours upon that cross. If you will repent of your sins, just as I have for mine, (tell God you are sorry for your sins and mean it) and ask Jesus to forgive you and change your heart, he will! Then live your life in obedience to Him, and you will spend eternity in Heaven instead of in the lake of fire with the wicked!

Jesus has come into the world just for this purpose, to save us from the consequences of our sins!
For the wages (consequences) of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 6:23 (Parenthesis is mine)

Jesus is God's gift to you! Won't you receive His gift of eternal life which is in Christ Jesus!
